Evangelization

WHAT IS

Evangelization

Evangelization is the proclamation of the Gospel, the Good News of salvation in and through Christ, among those who have not yet known or received it; and efforts for the progressive development of the life of faith among those who have already received the gospel and all that it entails.

Priest

Evangelization is the primary mission of the Church, in which all members of the Church are called to participate

Mountain goal

The Goal of Evangelization

OVERALL GOAL: The salvation of all men.

This is good and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

1 Timothy 2:3-4

SPECIFIC GOAL: What are your specific goals? How do we get from where we are to where we want to be?

ALICE IN WONDERLAND APPROACH TO

Alice in wonderland

Evangelization

Alice in wonderland
Alice: “Would you tell me please, which way I ought to walk from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
“I don’t much care where,” said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you walk,” said the Cat. “…so long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an explanation.
“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough!”

Lewis Caroll

The predominant attitude toward evangelization within the Church today can be accurately described as an “Alice in Wonderland” approach. We don’t know where we are and we don’t know where we’re going…and we don’t seem to really care.

WHEN IT COMES TO EVANGELIZATION

We Need a Plan

Alabama has been 3%-4% Catholic for most of the last 100 years. For a Church whose primary mission is evangelization….that is a sign of failure to carry out its primary mission.

However, do we want to be like Alice when it comes to the salvation of souls? Not knowing, or caring, where we are going…or how we are to get there?

St. Peter’s RCIA program - 105 candidates and catechumens one year, only 44 the next.

Why?

It is more timely and important than ever that the Church should give special attention and priority to the evangelization of culture and to the inculturation of the faith, bringing the many energies of her members to bear on a precise, clear-cut and dynamic project.
